Hey Everyone,

Spring has arrived, which in New England means it's winter one day then summer the next. Mind you that doesn't necesarily mean we switch to summer and stay there; we actually just alternate between the two seasons on a random day-to-day basis. This is fine by me because I get to alternate between hot and iced coffee. It's that kind of variety in my life that makes me so very exciting...

Couple of big things happening this week. For starters, Pitchfork reviewed both the new Wooden Birds album and the new Viva Voce (details below). Next, Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women released an incredible new record on Yep Roc Records. Last (but definitely not least), War Tapes tour dates and updates are listed below. We STRONGLY recommend you see this band live and we can totally hook any store up with tickets. Just email AJ@flea-marketing.com for tickets to a date around your town.

Pitchfork reviews: THE WOODEN BIRDS "MAGNOLIA"

Wooden Birds

One of our favorite Barsuk bands, The Wooden Birds, released Magnolia on 5/12. First off it's a great all-around record from front to back. Pitchfork gave it a very respectable 7.1. You can read the full review HERE. As always, you can get the record from RedEye Distribution.

Pitchfork reviews: VIVA VOCE "ROSE CITY"

Viva Voce

Another one of our favorite Barsuk bands, Viva Voce, released Rose City on May 26th. To read what Pitchfork had to say about the record click HERE. We're proud to say they grabbed a 7.6!

Here's a sample excerpt from the review:

"...The key to Viva Voce's success-- long assumed to be Anita's guitar prowess and the interplay between the percussive husband and his melodic wife-- is her gilded coo. She has a limber voice that can wring the same sort of girlish, sassy flirtation from its cords as Jenny Lewis or Emily Haines, yet it's also adept at the sort of airy, hushed lilt that makes Chan Marshall and Feist so captivating."

DAVE ALVIN & THE GUITY WOMEN: "s/t" [OUT NOW]

Dave

Next up, you've got the new Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women album to check out. Out on Yep Roc Records, the group was born out of a performance at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco. The songs, built up around Dave Alvin's acoustic guitar work, were fleshed out with the musical talents of the Guilty Women, seven female veterans of the Americana scene. "The self-titled debut from this unique assemblage of players led by Alvin is a spirited collection of thoughtful yet dynamic tunes, featuring world-class musicianship worthy of his now-legendary pedigree" (yeproc.com). Starting in June, Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women will be touring across the country so be sure to check them out as they play near you.
