Greetings from Brooklyn! CMJ has come and gone, and it was fantastic as always. And our livers are still paying for it, as always. No thanks to people like Dovecote who are a little too trigger happy with the drink tickets. As always. Just kidding, please don't ever stop feeding us drinks like that. It was great to see everyone that we did, and we're sorry for those that we didn't. There's always SXSW! Or just hit us up when you visit New York. Cause we're New Yorkers now. Or something. Lots to cover in this newsletter, so I'll keep this part breif. Get stoked about all of the new music coming your way. New Kathryn Calder (of The New Pornographers) and In Medias Res this week, new Phantogram next week and a new mothereffing Nada Surf record first thing next year. What more could you possibly ask from us?? Everyone is on tour! Go see shows! Let us know what we can put you on the list for! |

KATHRYN CALDER "Bright And Vivid" [OUT TODAY] |
||||||
![]() |
Dig the swooning female vox of the New Pornographers… when it’s not Neko Case? Well Canadian indie rock queen Kathryn Calder is back with her 2nd solo album Bright and Vivid brought to you by File Under:Music. With its wide range of sounds and styles, the record proves it’s not the worst thing in the world when your husband so happens to be a producer. Having recorded the album in her living room, “She also did additional touch-ups at Vancouver's Hive Creative Labs, pointing to an extended period of collaboration with her husband and Hive studio whiz Colin Stewart as the reason for eclectic sound of Bright and Vivid. In fact, the pair began working on the album before Are You My Mother? even arrived on shelves.” In an interview with Exclaim Kathryn states- “’When your husband is the producer, it means that we can spend a whole bunch of time doing a whole bunch of weird things to the songs,’ she says. Be sure to check out the collaborative effort, on shelves today from Nail/Allegro. And check out a great New York Times review HERE! |

IN MEDIAS RES "It Was Warm And Sunny When We First Set Out" [OUT TODAY] |
||||||
![]() |
No stranger to the scene, Vancover-based In Medias Res have been making fine tunes for over a decade now and will be releasing It Was Warm and Sunny When We First Set Out on File Under: Music (Nail/Allegro) today. Those years of touring and practice have certainly paid off and we aren’t the only ones that think so - “Listen closely enough and you can hear those years of determination echoed in the anthemic call to arms that is This Could Be the One. Elsewhere, you’ll find this unflappable spirit driving the bewitching melodies of Tonight I Am New and rattling rib cages on The Final Flight of the Bees. There is a confidence here that’s owed to the quartet’s considerable lifespan. While some excitable upstart might dream of producing a similarly polished effort, the cohesion of this seasoned crew only comes with time. Though the winning ticket has eluded In Medias Res for nearly 10 years, in that time, the group has homed in on a sound compelling enough to capture the imagination of those beyond our cityscape.” (www.straight.com). |

PHANTOGRAM "Nightlife" [Nov 1] |
||||||
![]() |
And now for the moment most of you have been waiting for, new music from Phantogram! Get your dancing shoes ready cause November 1st they’re back with a new 6 song ep Nightlife. The ep has already been getting some early buzz around the single Don’t Move, Pitchfork raves – “If you have an ear for catchy electro-pop, Don't Move might make you wonder why you haven't heard much about Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, the duo behind Phantogram. This song's production is so addictively bright and poppy that it's hard to believe that on their debut LP, Eyelid Movies, they favored darker, more subtle music that nods to trip hop. Don't Move transitions through intermittent layers of horns and keyboard sections that all seem to lock together, all built on an endlessly looped clappy sample and Barthel's lyrical hook. ‘Keep your body still/ Keep your body still’, she sings, but here such a request is futile.” (pitchfork.com) |
