Hey Everyone!

Well we are finally knee deep in summer out here in New England! Its hot as blazes out, and we couldn't be happier. We also just announced a festival here in beautiful Portsmouth, outdoors on the waterfront, that we are helping our good friends at 3S Artspace with. We've got Fountains Of Wayne, Mike Doughty, Soft Swells and Tan Vampires playing. Anyone within a 50 mile radius better find their way out here on August 27! Best. Summer. Ever.

We have a few really special things to talk about this week. First of all Mat Santos of Ra Ra Riot has a solo record coming out that everyone needs to pay close attention to. Its a limited press, and when they're gone, they're gone!

Also, we want to introduce all of you to The Great Book Of John. Some of you may have read about them last week in the AIMS newsletter. We'll have an absolutely gorgeous 7" for this release if you are interested in doing any contesting or something else with them. Just let us know, and we'll get some out to you.

Everyone is on tour! Go see shows! Let us know what we can put you on the list for!

Mathieu Santos "Massachusetts 2010" *LP ONLY* [August 2]

Line
Would Work

Trained as a painter but best known for his role as a founding member (and the extraordinarily agile bassist) of chamber pop heavy-hitters Ra Ra Riot, Mathieu Santos has surprised himself by making a solo record. The songs that compose Massachusetts 2010, to be released this summer on Barsuk, were first written – you guessed it – last year in the great state of Massachusetts. Following their recording, however, those demos were set aside and left to sit while Santos spent time on the road with his main band. In the winter and spring of 2011, he returned to the 10 songs with fresh perspective and a critical distance from the context in which they were originally written. Applying his visual artist’s focus on only the most essential compositional elements, Santos borrowed a friend’s guest house in rural New Jersey and finalized the album in just a few days there. He worked quickly, maintaining the impulsive freedom of the original writing process but stripping down the palette and creating an arresting sonic environment that sparkles with tantalizing abstract imagery and finely-observed details, set against a backdrop of wide open spaces.

This record will only be available on vinyl (w/ download card) and is limited to just a few hundred copies! Available from Barsuk (Redeye).

The Great Book Of John "s/t" [August 16]

Line
7.9!

The Great Book of John is led by Taylor Shaw -- founding guitarist of Birmingham Alabama's late, great Wild Sweet Orange. Shaw's music is eminently lyrical – recalling Jeff Buckley's psychedelic soul, Leonard Cohen's poetic (and lacerating) wordplay, and fiery fretwork influenced by Stevie Ray Vaughn and David Gilmour as much as it is by Radiohead. Yes, those are big names to drop, but this is big music – emotional, cinematic, but never pandering. Dreams writ large but still cryptic and surreal. And though these songs almost ceaselessly flow from Shaw, The Great Book of John is very much a band – and a formidable one at that. Along with fellow WSO alumni vocalist Bekah Fox, bassist Alex Mitchell, and drummer Chip Kilpatrick, The Great Book of John can conjure the sublime in any setting – with or without electricity.

This beautiful record is available from our new friends at Communicating Vessels - expect plenty more from them in the next few months. They are distributed by Burnside, but you'll also be able to get their records from whatever one-stop you order from.
